Essential Precautions to Prevent Damage in Diesel Generators

Diesel generators are vital for providing backup power during outages and ensuring the continuous operation of essential systems. 1. Secure Stator Windings

Ensure that the stator windings are firmly in place to prevent phase-to-phase short circuits. Regularly inspect the end parts of the stator windings to confirm they are not loose.

2. Prevent Cooler Leaks

Cooling systems are crucial for the efficient operation of generators. During routine inspections, carry a flashlight to thoroughly check for leaks or condensation in the cooler. Additionally, ensure that the cooling water pressure does not exceed the rated value to avoid potential leaks or bursts.

3. Monitor Negative Sequence Current

During operation, pay close attention to the negative sequence current meter. Early detection of abnormal readings can help prevent short circuits within the rotor windings, which could lead to severe damage.

4. Avoid Phase-to-Phase Short Circuits in Stator Windings

Take measures to prevent any short circuits between phases in the stator windings. This includes regular inspections and maintenance of insulation and connections.

5. Prevent Incomplete Phase Operation

In the event of incomplete phase operation of the generator-transformer unit’s main circuit breaker, related protection mechanisms should promptly activate the breaker failure protection. If the main circuit breaker cannot be disconnected, all power sources connected to the same busbar should be disconnected to prevent damage.

6. Prevent Asynchronous Parallel Operation

Ensure that the generator is synchronized properly before connecting it to the grid. Asynchronous paralleling can cause severe mechanical and electrical stress on the generator.

7. Prevent Local Overheating

Generators can overheat for various reasons. If the overheat alarm activates, take immediate steps to reduce the temperature. If necessary, shut down the generator to address the issue.

8. Address Rotor Winding Ground Faults

If a ground fault occurs in the rotor winding, immediately identify the fault’s location and nature. If it is a stable metal grounding fault, shut down the generator for repairs without delay.

9. Prevent Excitation System Failures

A malfunction in the excitation system can significantly damage the generator. If the automatic channel of the excitation regulator fails, repair it promptly and restore it to operation. Never operate the generator on manual excitation regulation for extended periods. When adjusting the generator’s active load during manual regulation, always adjust the reactive load first to maintain static stability and prevent generator instability.
